Odd-form components cannot be assessed from a family name alone. Two connectors, relays or capacitors that serve a similar electrical function can differ in housing shape, lead condition, packaging and the surfaces available for handling. A useful first review therefore follows the complete path from incoming material to the intended PCB insertion result.
Confirm the component identity and condition
Start with the part number, drawing if available, clear photos and representative samples. Review the housing, polarity or keying features, lead pattern, lead length, acceptable contact areas and any surfaces that must not be marked. Samples should represent the normal variation seen in incoming material rather than one carefully selected part.
This step identifies questions; it does not by itself confirm that the component can be fed, gripped or inserted automatically.
Review incoming packaging
Record whether the component arrives in tape, tube, tray, bulk or another format, including its actual orientation and condition when received. Packaging affects singulation, lead protection and how a stable pickup position might be created. If more than one supplier or packaging format is used, each condition should be included in the review.
Map the handling and insertion interfaces
Feeding, presentation, the end tool, insertion direction and PCB support form one handling chain. Engineering needs to identify a repeatable pickup datum, suitable contact area and a way to protect the leads during transfer. On the board side, hole data, board thickness, nearby components, underside clearance and support access can change the proposed method.

Define validation evidence before trials
Before sample testing, agree what will be observed and recorded. The review may include orientation at the presentation point, component condition after handling, PCB positioning, insertion condition and the method used to judge the agreed result. The sample quantity and operating conditions must fit the question being evaluated; one successful movement is not evidence for every production condition.

This checklist supports an initial review, but it does not confirm feasibility, final configuration, capacity or acceptance.
